In order to make the most of a music video and to make sure all the appropriate ideas are within it and also in the correct order a storyboard needs to be made to give the actors and production crew a clear direction as to what is going to happen in the video product. A storyboard is a sequence of images that outline the type of shots, duration, action of any scene within a video media product.
Our ideas for a music video was a joint decision in which faheem and luqmaan contributed there ideas and settled on an agreement. We decided to have the actual video longer then the soundtrack and this is to add to the overall narrative of the music video.
><
In this part of the video the main character will bump into a pedestrian and ignore them and walk off and this is how the music video starts. We chose this idea because it provides the basis as to the meaning of the music video. As we wanted our brand image to be positive we decided to focus our music video on the reformation of a character who generally is not a good person. Following this the idea of the main character being hit by a car to knock him unconcious comes from a line in the chorus of the song "with my beat and my keys ..." this dennotes the idea of how his message is passed on through music and the keys represent the car which allows him to get to work in a persons mind (pupiteer).
><
In this part of the music video we chose to have a pupiteer who is a member of the group and he begins by playing an imaginary keyboard infront of the victim this keyboard is played along with song. We chose to have a pupiteer we thought the aspect of having someone play psychological games with someone in order to good added a good twist to the music video. This also went with the theme of the soundtrack as although the music seems very positive and lively the lyrics however contrast this. This also allowed us to be very creative within the narrative. Following this the main chracter then falls backwards and falls into another scene as where he sees the driver who knocked him over but he is a different person. This is where the psycholgical game begins and this also adds some humour which we have found from research that our target audience (16 - 25) appreciate. The idea of of having numerous people being one character not only saves on effort and finding actors for us but adds an interesting twist to the music video which shows off our creativity.
><
Following this the main character (Faheem) is running away from people that he is seeing that looks exactly like the driver who ran him over. The look alike character then bumps into Faheem and get's frustrated and then pushes Faheem back which resembled when he hit the pedestrian earlier on in the video. We chose to add this in the music video as this was the pupiteer's way of showing Faheem how it feels and also to show him that what he is doing is wrong. At this point in the music video the chorus reaches the line "...back to square 1" at which Faheem after being pushed falls back to where he had the accident. This is so it follows the lyrics in the song and also to add some irony.
><
At this part the frustration kicks in and as the camera focu's on the face of Faheem as he is walking show's off his frustration and how he is unable to escape from this situation. This is effective as it amplifies the seriousness of the situation and also the overall appeal of the control of the pupiteer over Faheem. Following this we decided to add in some flashbacks this is very efficient as this allows us to show some editing skills along with falling within the narrative of the music video. Also this allows us to use previous footage whilst still conveying the message of frustration and isolation. This also show's off in term's of the narrative how the character is beginning to understand the error of his ways and to show how the pupiteer is spreading his work. Also following this sequence the pupiteer is shown singing to following line "yeah ... yeah" this is showing off how his job is done and the character now understands what he has done.
><
Lastly, the pupiteer is shown from a low angle shot and he is shown standing tall which amplifies his power and influence and this is because he takes full control over Faheem at this point and get's him to walk towards the road to be hit by the car again to "end his suffering" and to take away what he has learnt from this dilema. This is almost to dennote a threat as this is what he can do if you are like Faheem and this is also to bring that "it's for your benifit" factor which is to show people how even though what he is doing seems harsh he is doing it for a good cause and they will benifit from going through this dilema as what he does needs to be done to stop them being the way they are. The music video ends with Faheem leaving his headphones on the road as they where what he thinks caused the accident and put him in that state. The last thing shown on screen is someone taking the headphones which dennote's as mentioned before the fact that the pupiteer is spreading not only with his message but his music. This is also to show people about spreading the message of being good people and this is what we where trying to convey but in an un-orthadox way.
We understand how the narrative of this music video is a little odd but we decided to take a gamble with it in the hope that it will appeal to the younger audience as the electronic genre gave us an opening to add in a very abstract narrative. Also we understand how the overall narative of the music video is not usual of an RnB genre song however, we felt as this soundtrack is of mixed genre's taking a different approach to the music video stepping aside from the sex appeal in dancers and wealth appeal in artists could produce some good results.
Faheem.
