album cover draft

This is the first draft of our album cover that we had done as part of our digipack. To be honest, whilst creating this album cover i wasnt entirely sure about how this effect would turn out, but seeing the first draft of it really blew us away and we were really proud of ourselves of the fact that this actually looked really good and also was given praise by other students and media teaching staff. This first draft is more or less how we wanted the cover to look like, but with a bit ofediting it will be a good part of our project.

Faheem.

magazine pull out first draft

This is the first draft of the magazine pull out advertisement which i am pleased to say we were both quite happy with and so were the media helping staff and teachers. The whole concept of this advert had to be all about the artist and the album, and i think personally by creating a unique style which i havent seen before at A level, with the different styles of boxes and poses the model took, and also the boxes placed in the shape of a 1, it is really what we all wanted this to turn out like. Hopefully with a few tweaks and editing this should be finished easily.

album covers

This album cover can be seen as very dark and interesting and mysterious, as it is plain black and white, but also because of 'the roc' sign, which is surrounded by quite a lot of rumours and brings attention to that itself.
The audience of the artists new album would be strong followers of hip hop as jay-z is seen as the king of hip hop, and so would definately be a success.
Target audience would aim to be aspirers because of the chains and money and status, hence the word dynasty written all over the album. They would also be around sicio economic status C-E.

One thing we do want is for our album cover to attract attention, but not the wrong sort of attention, like this album cover does. We wouldnt want our album getting the wrong publicity and bad rumours, so we will have to think about this long and hard, to not make any indecent signs or signals that could spark a row or argument or could cause offence to anybody.

luqy

album covers

This album cover is quite interesting because it shows a kind of conflict, between light and dark, good and bad etc. because all around the artist is all wasteland and rubbish, whereas she is dressed in white overalls and can be seen to stand out from the background. Also, the album title, 'a little deeper' suggests a struggle or something along those lines, or something she is striving to want or needs. Target audience would be quite decently sized, would be targeted at the younger generation as it is a young artist with fresh new music, so 16-26 yr olds, probably socio economic class of about C-E. It is actually a quite good efecct and narrative that the artist has used for the album cover, and this is something we hope to achieve when creating ours.

Faheem.

album covers research : tinie tempah

This album cover is a personal favourite of mine and appeals to a large number of people, especially in particular age ranges, e.g. 16-25 both males and females, but could be seen as more masculine as tinie style of music is quite masculine. This drew a lot of attention at first glance because of the colour palette used, but also of the narrative behind the pictures. Tinie is almost seen as 'god like', with firm control and grasp of the city/country, and is quite happy with wht he has achieved and has acquired over the years. There is a lot of narrative in this album cover, but it works as he is a very fresh, hot young artist at the moment. His target audience ranges from males to females, young to middle aged people and also different ethnicities and religions as it is seen as more westernised so appeals to consumers.

The effects and lighting go almost hand in hand on this album cover, and this is what we think is going to either make or break our album cover for our artist and track.

Faheem.

album covers research

This album cover really caught my attention because it doesnt only show insecurity, but also humour, but very serious humour. At first i was quite disgusted about what nirvana put as their album cover as it clearly shows a baby who cant swim, which is quite shocking and gives a person the same feeling of shock and disgust, but after a while i looked at it again and i actually found it quite funny, that they had the narrative of the baby being like a fish and the dollar being like bait, so the baby is trying to swim after the dollar. other people who saw this whilst i was researching reacted in the same way, but also found it absolutely hilarious at the end.

This is what we are trying to achieve when creating our album cover, but we have to be careful we dont discriminate against any religion or ethnicity.

luqy

music advert research..

This music advert pullout really caught my eye instantly because firstly of the beauty and attractiveness of the artist, Gwen Stefani, but also because of the use of vibrant colours, and also because of the propps used in this advert.
People who would love this advert would definately be aspirers because majority of people can only dream about having lots of money or status, and Gwen shows both these through this pullout.
The target audience for this would be socio economic status of A-E, so i think it applies to everyone, and also both males and females, but would appeal to males because the artist is very very attractive, but also females, because they would want the status that Gwen Stefani has achieved.
Needs (maslows hierarchy) that would be fulfilled would be love belonging, safety, and self esteem, as these are alll portrayed through this advert, through the wealth, and facial expressions of status and confidence and rule.
These are exactly the signs and indications we need to think about to put into our music advert pullout, and i think it would contribute a lot to the brand image and identity.

Faheem.

music magazine ad research..

This magazine pullout ad is quite eye catching because it is so unusual to have scenery and background pictures such as clouds and small mountains, so breaks the conventions of typical music genres, but also this maybe because this music genre could be a niche market to the audience, so could only appeall to them. From this advert, the target audience seem to be around socio economic groups of B- lower C, because the way the product is put across to the audience, it has a hint of class and exquisiteness, so connotates calmness, peace and tranquility, so the audience can be seen as rich and upper class.

however, from a personal viewpoint i think that the use of colour is very poor when this was created, so it doesnt appeal to me as well as it would have done for other people.

Because our music track and genre are so completely different to this, we have to be careful not to make any mistakes or change the typical convetions and stereotypes of our genre as then people will be confused as to what they would be looking at.

luqy

music magazine ad research

WebVersion.jpg

This is an example of a music advert as a pullout in a magazine. As you can see, it would catch the eye of the audience as there is a rather enlarged shot of a very attractive woman on the front, and also big bold letters and words so they stand out. This would especially hook men into discovering more about this artist and the single.

It would also appeal to the target audience as there is a contrast of colours used which makes it stand out even more.
The target audience that this artist would have wanted to aim at would be around socio economic class B-lower C, as there is a touch of class about this music advert.

this advert would make the music genre seem to be classical, so the audience would be quite wealthy stereotypically, but also include both males and females.

The factors we need to consider when creating our music advert pullout would be our target audience, socio economic class, if they seem to be aspirers etc, which needs are met to them ( maslow) and if they are provided by a sense of security ( young and rubicam).

Progress Report Faheem Patel

This week we began our filming part of the project after completion of all our planning etc. Filming turned out to be difficult as this was our first time using the camera at proper location's, with natural lighting the shot's where difficult to get right especially after one scene needed to be done at a low angle shot.

However, the shot's that where filmed turned out to be decent but not completely satisfying. The shot's that where taken where taken numerous times in order to get the best possible one. Also on an acting basis the actors seemed a little reserved in terms of being in character for the scenes however, by the next session this problem should be sorted.

A minor setback of this filming session was the bad weather as it began to rain after about an hour and a half of filming which lead to us to stop filming to due prevent damage to the equipment.

Faheem Patel.

Planning!! - Referencing planning resources and research

Websites

The first website in which we found our soundtrack and listened to numerous others was - www.jamendo.com/en/ This website contains many soundtracks that are not copyrighted which means we are able to use these for our media project.

Another resource which turned out to be very useful was the simple search engine google (www.google.com) This was used for much of the research and also to provide many images that where needed for the research.

Youtube was also a major website that was used in order to research music video's as we veiwed many video's on this site. (http://www.youtube.com/)

Faheem.

Planning!! - Soundtrack

We chose to do the song Square 1 by Jemex feat Derrius Dean. We found this soundtrack on www.jamendo.com/en/ and we really enjoyed this after listening to numerous other songs previously. The music on Jamendo is not copyrighted and therefore, we did not need permission to use this soundtrack.

We felt as though the genre mix went well and from the first time hearing this soundtrack ideas for the music videos began within our minds and this is one of the reasons why we chose to do this soundtrack. Also this soundtrack had some workable lyrics for us and also a good beat which we felt we could work with and these are also reasons why we chose to do this soundtrack.

Overall, we found this to be a very enjoyable soundtrack, and also a soundtrack which would interest our intended target audience being teenagers to early adults.

Faheem + Luqy.

Planning - Organised Actors

For our music video before we planned who was playing what role we researched on what type of characters to have in our music video. We where aware that the two project member's (Faheem and Luqmaan) needed to be a part of the video and therefore, we had to choose our third key character as well as a fourth minor role.

This was a candidate that we decided would be suitable for the minor role and initially we decided to have him playing that role however, setbacks prevented this.

We felt as though this would have been a very suited character to this music video due to his confidence over all image and enthusiasm.

This person was chosen again for the minor role in which Faheem pushes a walking by pedestrian but after consideration we felt it not suitable.

This actor was chosen to play the role of the pupiteer due to his strong over all image and size but in the end a more suited candidate was chosen for this role.

We chose Adam as the pupiteer and also the walker by pedestrian as an extra twist on the storyline in which Adam plays a pedestrian who ultimately is the pupiteer out hunting for this prey and which Faheem falls into the trap of.

Faheem.

Planning!! - Location shots and filming schedule

We chose to have a very rural location as to where to film our music video and this is so it is in keeping with the narrative of the music video being about an everyday teenager who represents teenager's in general and about how they go about everyday life.

This is where we will be filming the first part of our music video (L1 - Location 1.) We chose this area because it perfectly slotted in with our narrative and it also gave us a clear area in which we could film and also have free space for our equipment without interference. Whilst at the same time this path isn't used much which worked out advantageous for us it seems a pleasant rural location to shoot the our music video.

The next location in which we where going to film is a path with some greenery along side it. We chose this location because we felt again it had similar properties as the first in terms of filming and equipment whilst at the same time it had the needed criteria for the scene we wanted to film. This is because it was a clear path with some trees on the side which is not used much and also the greenery on both sides we felt would suite the idea of a jogger running past.

The third location in which we decided to shoot we chose because we wanted many people around to increase the impact of the scene and we felt character we where basing here would be best suited in a location like this reading a book. However, unlike the other too filming would be an issue here as there are many people and the bushes behind comes in the way of the type of shot we are aiming to get and therefore, we will need to familiarize ourselves with the zoom aspect of the camera in trying to still get the same image.

The final location will be in the media studio where we wanted an image of the pupiteer to be in complete darkness with the light being focused on him and we found this to be the most suited and controllable environment.

Filming schedule

Above is the filming schedule that we will be following based on when ever all the needed crew members are available.

Faheem.

Planning - Props list and Costune plans

Props

For our music video we will be needing many props such as the following:

><

Some headphones and an Mp3. This is for the first few scenes where Faheem will be wearing some headphones while walking and these ultimately lead him to having an accident. This prop also is used at the end as it is left on Faheem's chest while he lies on the road these will be used as a sign telling Faheem how he had an accident due to them and also they are how the pupiteer was able to get to him.

><

We will also be needing a car and this is a key prop because we will be needing this prop for the first few and last few scenes in which Faheem get's hit by a car as part of the pupiteer's plan. This is one of the "tools" that the pupiteer uses in order to get his job done as mentioned in the chorus of the soundtrack.

><

As a group we also decided to have a pair of sunglasses and this is because we wanted some mystery around the pupiteer's overall image and this also gives the image of confidence, class, mystery and also is a recent convention in clothing items used by many artists e.g. Flo rida, Tinie Tempah etc.

We also decided to have a book as part of the music video when luqmaan is sitting on a bench as an old man reading a book. We decided this because again it is part of the lyrics "when i'm with a book just me and my mind." A further and last prop we will be needing is a mike for when the pupiteer is doing the chorus.

Costumes

All together there will be six costumes in total the main reason being Luqmaan will be dressed as a number of different people as part of our narrative and also Faheem will have two different costumes.

The first costume is what the pupiteer will be wearing throughout the music video. We chose this look because firstly the colours are very dark showing his darkside whilst at the same time his shirt is grey showing a mix of both black and white in this case representing good and bad. The blue sunglasses on his face however, represent his more human side and his youth. The blue also represents a fun more childish side to the pupiteer which we where trying to get accorss.

Overall, the dress of the pupiteer is very smart and this is so it is in keeping with the RnB genre of the soundtrack. Also this is because the pupiteer seems very modern and again young so this is to appeal to our young audiences whom also dress like this.

Faheem's regular costume is predominantly blue and this is to show off his youth and naivness. Also the red t-shirt underneath show's off his anger and evil side. This is because he is not a very nice character to begin with.

The next costume is what Faheem will be wearing once the pupiteer has taken control over his mind and this was chosen as it is still fashionable whilst at the same time conveying the message we wanted too. The colours are simply black and white and these colours carry numerous denotations to them. Firstly the black and white are supposed to symbolize being a prisoner almost in jail (prison uniform colours.) Also this black and white colour scheme is supposed to represent all of Faheem's characteristics being stripped away from him whilst he is in the pupiteer's world and this is also to amplify the pupiteer's overall control over Faheem.

In Luqmaan's first costume he is dressed in formal clothing which represents him being on his way to work and this was done as it is a regular day occurance that someone is speeding being late for work however, this is how the pupiteer is making it seem to the audience. This show's him as an everyday regular character who is later shown to also be being used by the pupiteer.

In the next scene Luqmaan is seen to be running past as a jogger and this is supposed to represent the earlier scene which took place at the beginning of the music video where Faheem runs into a nearby pedestrian.

Lastly Luqmaan is dressed as a middle aged man reading a book in the town centre where he encounters Faheem for the last time and this is done because we wanted to give off the image that Faheem is seeing the person who ran him over's face everywhere which is almost a surrogate aspect for the pupiteer.

Planning - Synopsis and main characters

We decided to have three main characters in our music video and these three characters are part of a group (band.) The first of the three main charcters is Luqmaan Adam:

Luqmaan's role will be to play the familliar face which one of the other main characters will be seeing everywhere which is the basis of our music video. The next main character is Faheem Patel:

Faheem will be playing the role of the pivoting character in this music video who will be being tormented by the puppetier due to his cruel and ignorant personallity. The puppeteer will be played by Adam Survay:

Adam will be playing the role of the puppeteer who will be promoting the brand identity the most as his role is to teach his "prey" a lesson about his wrong doings.

Synopsis

The idea behind our music video is to show that a person thinks that his conscience is playing up on him and he thinks he is becoming insane however, he does not know that this has been staged by the pupiteer to teach him a lesson in being a person. This is the message we are trying to convey of our band.

To begin with there is no music and Faheem will be walking down a footpath with his headphones in and he then bumps into a person walking the other way who falls to the ground. Faheem then looks at them and instead of helping walks off to cross the road he looks both ways sees nothing and then crosses and then suddenly a car turns up and hit's him (Muisc starts.)

As he looks up he sees Adam plaing an imaginary keyboard standing over him, the driver doesn't seem to acknowledge adam (Luqmaan) and comes to Faheem's aid. Faheem seems to get up ok shakes it off and say's he's ok and walks backwards frm the panicked driver. He hits the curb and falls backwards into another location (town) where he sees a buisness man reading a newspaper, the newspaper shifts and its Luqmaan faheem recognizes him but luqmaan doesn't seem to and upon being glared at get's frustrated.

Faheem run's to avoid conflict and run's into a jogger (luqmaan) who get's frustrated and pushes faheem back who falls back to where he had the accident but nothing is there whilst in the sqaure one the line reads "back to square 1."

This is a continuing sequence untill the end where Faheem wakes up with on the road lying there alone with a memorabillia from teh pupiteer as to which he get's up and leaves and someone else takes.

Luqy.

Planning - Storyboard

In order to make the most of a music video and to make sure all the appropriate ideas are within it and also in the correct order a storyboard needs to be made to give the actors and production crew a clear direction as to what is going to happen in the video product. A storyboard is a sequence of images that outline the type of shots, duration, action of any scene within a video media product.

Our ideas for a music video was a joint decision in which faheem and luqmaan contributed there ideas and settled on an agreement. We decided to have the actual video longer then the soundtrack and this is to add to the overall narrative of the music video.

><

In this part of the video the main character will bump into a pedestrian and ignore them and walk off and this is how the music video starts. We chose this idea because it provides the basis as to the meaning of the music video. As we wanted our brand image to be positive we decided to focus our music video on the reformation of a character who generally is not a good person. Following this the idea of the main character being hit by a car to knock him unconcious comes from a line in the chorus of the song "with my beat and my keys ..." this dennotes the idea of how his message is passed on through music and the keys represent the car which allows him to get to work in a persons mind (pupiteer).

><

In this part of the music video we chose to have a pupiteer who is a member of the group and he begins by playing an imaginary keyboard infront of the victim this keyboard is played along with song. We chose to have a pupiteer we thought the aspect of having someone play psychological games with someone in order to good added a good twist to the music video. This also went with the theme of the soundtrack as although the music seems very positive and lively the lyrics however contrast this. This also allowed us to be very creative within the narrative. Following this the main chracter then falls backwards and falls into another scene as where he sees the driver who knocked him over but he is a different person. This is where the psycholgical game begins and this also adds some humour which we have found from research that our target audience (16 - 25) appreciate. The idea of of having numerous people being one character not only saves on effort and finding actors for us but adds an interesting twist to the music video which shows off our creativity.

><

Following this the main character (Faheem) is running away from people that he is seeing that looks exactly like the driver who ran him over. The look alike character then bumps into Faheem and get's frustrated and then pushes Faheem back which resembled when he hit the pedestrian earlier on in the video. We chose to add this in the music video as this was the pupiteer's way of showing Faheem how it feels and also to show him that what he is doing is wrong. At this point in the music video the chorus reaches the line "...back to square 1" at which Faheem after being pushed falls back to where he had the accident. This is so it follows the lyrics in the song and also to add some irony.

><

At this part the frustration kicks in and as the camera focu's on the face of Faheem as he is walking show's off his frustration and how he is unable to escape from this situation. This is effective as it amplifies the seriousness of the situation and also the overall appeal of the control of the pupiteer over Faheem. Following this we decided to add in some flashbacks this is very efficient as this allows us to show some editing skills along with falling within the narrative of the music video. Also this allows us to use previous footage whilst still conveying the message of frustration and isolation. This also show's off in term's of the narrative how the character is beginning to understand the error of his ways and to show how the pupiteer is spreading his work. Also following this sequence the pupiteer is shown singing to following line "yeah ... yeah" this is showing off how his job is done and the character now understands what he has done.

><

Lastly, the pupiteer is shown from a low angle shot and he is shown standing tall which amplifies his power and influence and this is because he takes full control over Faheem at this point and get's him to walk towards the road to be hit by the car again to "end his suffering" and to take away what he has learnt from this dilema. This is almost to dennote a threat as this is what he can do if you are like Faheem and this is also to bring that "it's for your benifit" factor which is to show people how even though what he is doing seems harsh he is doing it for a good cause and they will benifit from going through this dilema as what he does needs to be done to stop them being the way they are. The music video ends with Faheem leaving his headphones on the road as they where what he thinks caused the accident and put him in that state. The last thing shown on screen is someone taking the headphones which dennote's as mentioned before the fact that the pupiteer is spreading not only with his message but his music. This is also to show people about spreading the message of being good people and this is what we where trying to convey but in an un-orthadox way.

We understand how the narrative of this music video is a little odd but we decided to take a gamble with it in the hope that it will appeal to the younger audience as the electronic genre gave us an opening to add in a very abstract narrative. Also we understand how the overall narative of the music video is not usual of an RnB genre song however, we felt as this soundtrack is of mixed genre's taking a different approach to the music video stepping aside from the sex appeal in dancers and wealth appeal in artists could produce some good results.

Faheem.

Faheem.

Planning - Brand identity of our product

The brand identity of a product are the ideas and images that people associate with it. The brand identity of our media product follows a mysterious trend. As the soundtrack we chose follows a number of genres being electronic, hip hop, grime and rnb this gave us much creative freedom in creating any aspect of this music video more so then if the soundtrach followed a single genre.

After listening to the soundtrach numverous times we concluded that an image that would best suite the group (band) who are in this music video should be very abstract. A brand image can be set in a number of ways firstly the colour pallete of the artist can be a huge factor in connoting/denoting a brand image, for example red can imply anger, blood, danger etc and this is why this colour is a popular choice for heavy metal groups. Due to the electronic aspect of our soundtrach we decided to have the colour pallete black and white which is a simple mix with many connotations the main one that we are trying to dennote being "hypnotic." The white in the pallete we where trying to dennote as being good and pure and the black being dark and illusive which we have made clear in the plot of the music video.

Following the actual lyrics of the sound track we tried representing the image that the group are out to do good deeds as in the music video the focus is in reformation rather then flash and sex appeal. This is similar to a music video done by black eyed peace called "where is the love?"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpYeekQkAdc

In this music video the focus was on passing an image and the brand identity was to focus on the good and our music video follows a similar trend whilst at the same time a dennotation as following the ending of the music video was to dennote that they are growing and spreading which could have numerous implications such as growing in popularity and also in spreading there message with music. This brand identity has also been shown in a recent album by a grime and electronic artist called Tinie Tempah.

As seen on Tinie Tempah's new album cover he has his arms around a city which dennotes the image that he is taking over and spreading which is the type of branding identity we are trying to pursue.

Faheem Patel.

Planning - Equipment and technologies

In order for the task to be complete efficiently there are numerous types of equipement that we need to ensure we have access too. To begin with the types of equipment we need to ensure we have such as a handheld video camera which will be used to shoot the music video and or any research also a piece of equipment linked with this being a tripod which will be used for the music video to produce still video footage. Following this we will need a digital stills camera which will be a key ascet to completeing this music video because it will be used for research, location shots, progress shots, shots that will be taken during production and actors etc.

The pieces of software which we will use are InDesign for completeing the ancillary task, Adobe Photoshop which we will use to edit pictures and also Final cut express which we will use to edit and create the final music video.

According to our plans we have decided to have some of the music video in front of the green screen which also means we will need access to the St marys media department theatre where we can use the green screen and also camera.

As used in our research we will also be using much of the internet for other research (http://www.google.co.uk/) and also researces such as http://www.jamendo.co.uk/ where we obtained our soundtrach from.

UK CHARTS ANALYSIS

from the charts that are presented in earlier posts, we have analysed that the RNB/ electronic genre has been quite successful through recent years. Artists such as tinie tempah have taken the UK charts by storm with this new exciting genre and because he is now a mainstream artist, this genre has become more and more popular to consumers. Even from these UK charts, we can analyse that even more artists have seen that there is a big target market for this genre, and so more and more artists are swiftly moving into producing tracks in this genre. From the recent charts, we can gather that the audience is growing rapidly because the genre is exciting, new and fresh, and also more and more artists have recognized there is talent to be made in this genre and can be seen as a kind of oppurtunity to make a name and status for themselves.

Feedback 8.11.10

Faheem and Luqmaan,

Your research is showing improvement, however, you need to make a few alterations. Firstly, the name of your blog should be your names - please change this.

You need to prove who the audience is! You have used audience theory to say who they are but show me that you are correct in thinking these people would actually like this artist and also find out from them what they like from artists and their videos. You need to do some primary audience research - questionnaires. Then collate the data, present it as charts, graphs etc and analyse the results.

Analsyse the charts results - what does tis tell you? How does the information help you with your planning? Is your genre popular?

The genre posts need illustrations/egs from actual videos. You can use stills and/or embed the actual videos in the blog.

Finally, you must show evidence of planning! You should have completed the planning by now but there's no evidence of it on here. I know you have been planning but you need to keep updating this blog. You haven't worked on tis since wed, 3rd Nov - unacceptabe! You must work on this in your own time!

See me with any problems.

psychographic profiling

The audience that our music video and music genre would appeal to aspirers because they would want to achieve a kind of status in the niche audience, and it is a niche audience because the genre is not mainstream, but relatively new.

Maslows hierarchy

consists of 5 categories, physiological needs, safety and security, love and belonging, self esteem and self actualization. Each category is about what kinds of needs the consumer has to fulfill to feel comfortable with the product that is being put across to them and which factors out of these five they feel the most.
For our audience profile, our consumers for the music video will be offered self actualization, as the music video will show the different aspects of the music genre and characters, such as creativity, meaningfulness and self-sufficiency. Self esteem, as they would feel good from watching the music video because of the genre of music, which is electronic/RNB, and if they like it it will appeal to them and give them a sense of status within themselves personally. Love and belonging because in the video there are a few statements which are not clearly visible, but in things like the narrative of the video, it involves quite a lot of emotion and understanding, so creates senses of love and belonging. Finally, safety and security as our music video is going to contain a lot of dangerous but safe shots, which will in turn leave consumers in the audience feeling that they are safe and secure.

Faheem.

Audience demographic profiling

DEMOGRAPHIC PROFILING
Age range: 18-25
why? because this type of music will intrigue the younger generation and appeal to them more than adults.

ethnicity : all races
why? This music is consumed by all races, black, caucasian, afro - carribean, asian etc.

Gender: both male and female
why? firstly we thought our genre of music would suit men more than women but as we researched more we found out that the ratio of men and women who like this type of genre was quite balanced and so would appeal to both of them.

socio-economic status: C-E
why? the most number of consumers that enjoy electronica/RNB music would be the lower classes because it would help them whilst enjoying this music and not worrying about work.
