genre conventions cntd. specifics to the genre

Typical settings of the electronic/RNB genre are mainly in an area with low key lighting and somewhere which is very dull and dark, because then the use of mise en scene and colour makes the video stand out moire and creates the effect brilliantly, which is what this genre is all about. This is what we hopefully want to create to maintain the standards of these music videos.
Typical characters that are in these type of music videos are the protagonist, which is usually the artist or the main character, the attractive woman/female figure. However, we are still deciding whether to use an attractive female figure in our music video because we want to challenge and push the non stereotypical conventions of music videos and the genre of music as much as possible.
The stereotypical plot/story in a electronic/RNB music video is that everything that happens makes no sense and it just happens, meaning nobody questions why the things happen, but it is exhilirating and exciting as it challenges typical conventions of music videos and music genres. We have almost finished our plot for our music video, and just brushing up on the final touches, and it is aimed to still challenge typical conventions of music genres and music videos.
cinematography is also a crucial part of our music video but also the genre because most music videos in this genre use a lot of close shots, high angled shots, handheld shots and canted angle shots, because this type of genre of music is meant to create confusion, show power, fast pace and create a sense of madness. This will definately be taken into account when thinking about this part of our planning.
Editing is very important to these music videos because using the styles and various forms of editing shots, these provide the kind of'cement', to make sure that the music video challenges the typical conventions and representations and that these challenges stick together to make sure they are effective.
There is a lot of mise en scene used when researching these music videos and i found out that most music videos have a lot of mise en scene included in them, which we would need to think about as well.

genre and narrative conventions

My media product is essentially going to follow and adhere to the conventions of a typical music video and  creating a digi-pack that ties in with the video, as well as a magazine advert that does the same. The ideas for my music video, however, challenge the typical conventions of a media product due to the controversial genre of music, which is electronica/RNB. I was influenced and inspired by music videos that I watched which used various original ideas and interesting shots and scenes. For example, I want to make sure that my video was not predictable by including the conventions that challenge the stereotypical genres of music, such as the genre of electronica/RNB. The audience I am aiming at are intrigued by unusual music videos and subject matters.

Age range: 18-25
why? because this type of music will intrigue the younger generation and appeal to them more than adults.

ethnicity : all races
why? This music is consumed by all races, black, caucasian, afro - carribean, asian etc.

Gender: both male and female
why? firstly we thought our genre of music would suit men more than women but as we researched more we found out that the ratio of men and women who like this type of genre was quite balanced and so would appeal to both of them.

socio-economic status: C-E
why? the most number of consumers that enjoy electronica/RNB music would be the lower classes because it would help them whilst enjoying this music and not worrying about work.

Songs from a similar genre to mine often have videos that are very bright, stand out and quirky and filled with creative imagination. For example, kanye west's ‘stronger' is filled with a variety of colour and imagination. I will definately follow this use of mise en scene in my music video by using light to convey meaning and add an overall tone, especially to make my music video stand out.

Kanye West - Stronger

An example of the electronic/ RNB genre is kanye west - stronger. Kanye west is a big artist and he is known worldwide and has been very successful in his music career. The conventions of this electronic/RNB music video are that it stands out because of the use of different colours which are shown as very bright and are made to stand out. Also, the style, appearance of the artist is very central that he is the main focus in the video. Moreover, there is a storyline, which is essential for an electronic/RNB music video.

A music video with a worldwide famous artist such as kanye west would typically be seen as appealling to a mainstream audience, but however the genre makes it a niche audience because the genre is quite new and fresh to the music industry. The gender for this music video would be mainly females as the song is about females, but males would also like this music. Race would be anybody, but maybe focus on young black people because of the use of phrases and also the way kanye is shown to us. The age range would be from around 18-25 as it is a funky fresh style of music that would appeal to young adults. Socio economic status that would fit in with this video would e people in the C-E class. People in the target audience would be aspirers as they would feel that these artists have achieved status by using the electronic/RNB genre, and would want to be like them.

This music video attracts the attention of the audience because of the genre of music, as it is something fresh and new and they havent heard anything like it before, but also the music video attracts attention because it is a kind of futuristic / present theme and story, and props and costumes used are confusing in a way but also appealling as they attract attention, and also the storyboard of the music video as it is bits of different scenes put together and allows slight confusion in a way. It also interests consumers because the music is something different to what they are used to hearing, and the music video is also weird and wonderful and causes confusion. The music video somehow creates desire for the genre of music of electronic/RNB because the video is seen as as 'weird and wonderful', and using a world reknown artist such as kanye west would create a sense of idol, and people would want to be like him and listen to electronica/RNB. This music video consists of a lot of action so it would make people want to listen to this genre because this type of genre is fast/medium paced, with a lot of action and swquences in the music and also muysic videois associated with the genre, so would make people want to go out and party and have a good time for example.

kanye west bear logo
This is manye west's brand image and logo. It is known worldwide and is associated with him and it has provided success for him in markets like clothing as a lot of fans value the brand image and identity.

shutter shades
The infamous shutter shades are also associated with kanye west as it is seen as his style and has brought a new fashion statement to his style.

Feedback 31.10.10

Lads, by now you should have copmpleted all your research and planning. You are a long way away from this. You need to complete all your research - analyse genre egs, brand identity of artist, audience research/questionnaire etc and planning. You should by now be ready to start production this week. You cannot afford to fall behind. I expect you to spend additional time in workshops this week toi make up for this. Consider this feedback evidence of a stage one warning.

Any problems or questions, see me.

Research - Initial Ideas

Our group consists of Luqmaan Adam and Faheem Patel. We have decided to create a music video for our coursework and the genre we intended to do is electro. initially we have decided to do a music video to current signed artists such as:

- Tinie Tempah - Frisky
- Tinie Tempah - Written in the stars
- Tinie Tempah - miami to ibiza

We chose the to do one of those songs because we felt our ideas suited this genre and type of music video.

However, as a safety precaution we also chose a couple of unsigned artists from "www.jamendo.com"

- Square 1 (ft.Derrius Dean) Jamex
- sexed up - Fhemando
- Better man - Steven Dunston
- Bertycox - The signal

Faheem Patel & Luqmaan Adam

Research!! - Square 1 (ft. derrius dean)

SQUARE 1 - DERRIUS DEAN
This is the track we have chosen to do for our a2 media music video project. Although here is a video, this video has been created by somebody else, not the actual music producer/writer, so is copyright free and this is the track we have decided to use for our project because it is a good example of the electronica genre.
