Evaluation Q4
Hey its me faheem and luqmaan again and the final question we have to answer for our evaluation is:
How did you use media technologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages?
Research
Google: one of the websites or should I say search engines that was vital to our research was Google (www.google.co.uk) this search engine allowed us to do nearly all our research this included work such as finding brand images, artist images, magazine covers, UK charts, sales figures, past media work from which we tried to utilize in our work and also improve.
YouTube: YouTube (www.youtube.com) was also vital in our research as we spent hours and hours searching through real life music videos of current artists in order for the inspiration of our music video and also to find certain conventions and also unique qualities as to which we could incorporate into our music video. This was a very useful sight as we found many videos which aided the creation of our music video and also gave us some insight into many things we needed to consider when attempting to create a successful music video such as artist image, different camera shots, types of narratives, pace of videos associated with the genre of our music video etc.
Jamendo: Jamendo was the site where we found the soundtrack and this was a very useful website as it holds many songs created by unsigned artists and therefore being copyright free which was ideal for a student because then the worry of trying to obtain permission for a song is removed. We spent a lot of time trying to find a song that we felt we could make a successful music video too. This was a very important resource in our coursework. It allowed us to search for certain genre’s the most popular songs and a lot more and so using this website was very easy and convenient which is something you need when doing a project which requires a lot of organisation.
Production
Final cut express: Final cut express was the software we used which is only available on apple. This was the software we used in order to edit all of our video footage mainly our music video. There were a lot of features that are available to use to in editing on this software and once you can get the hang of it you can create a video that’s as close to looking professional as can be. Some of the aspects of this software that we found very convenient and efficient were the timeline in which you could place the soundtrack and align the video with it. Also a feature that was used a lot during our editing stages was the crop feature which allows you to cut a video to get rid of any unwanted footage with a few simply clicks. Also when it comes to special effects we used many within our music video to make it looks professional one being synchronizing the artist along with the narrative and this was a very creative feature which we used by simply adjusting the opacity of the video clip and adding another video clip on top and this gives off a very professional look to it. Also we turned our flashbacks black and white this is typical of a romance genre music video however, we felt as though it also fit in well in our music video and conveyed the intended message well.

Directors commentary question 1 ( luqy)
Evaluation Q1 (directors commentary)
- Hi my name is Faheem Patel
- And im luqmaan adam
- And we made a music video to Square 1 by Jemex.
- The question we have to answer is:
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media texts?
- To begin with we are going to talk about the typical conventions for a music video has been outlined by the Goodwin theory. It states that music videos should demonstrate genre characteristics for example in a rock music video an audience would expect to see the band/artist performing at some point throughout the video. As our music video is mainly Hip hop and Rnb we kept in mind there the artist should appear often and in different shots as this is something that has become the “norm” in music videos of such a genre. An example we have here is Flo rida club can’t handle me.
Get cuts from club can’t handle me.
And these where present in our music video as shown. It is typical of music videos of such a genre to pay great focus on the main artist and we also felt this was a convention that was necessary in our music video in attracting the audience as so they can get a proper look at him and see his movements, image etc.
Cuts from Square 1.
- Secondly Goodwin outlined that there must be a relationship between the lyrics and visuals and this was definitely present in our music video as there was reference to keys in our video which were placed into the storyline to blend with the narrative. This also had implications towards a motor vehicle which we also had in our music video. Another line from which we based our narrative was “When you walk right past you can be so cruel.”
- Cuts from Square 1.
- Play Katy perry firework.
- This is also shown in the real life example of firework where the lyrics are stating fireworks as a metaphor and are also using fireworks in the video.
This was part of the trigger as to the narrative and we felt as though it went in well in introducing the music video and narrative. Furthermore, another link we established through the lyrics into our music video was “But I’m never caught off guard.”
- Cuts from Square 1.
This line we linked in with the narrative by getting the main character to interact with the other secondary character of our music video. This was to amplify the message we were trying to portray as teenagers feel at some point or another that they are invincible when in real fact they are only beginning their journey in and we wanted to have this message within the narrative.
- Cuts from Square 1.
Lastly the phrase Sqaure 1 played a significant role in our narrative as the phrase square 1 was used as a cue for all the events in our music video and if you look back when the artist mentions square 1 the main character ended up back at square 1.
- Next Goodwin outlined that there should be a relationship between the music and the visuals. In trying to place this we added the main artist playing the keyboard in time with the tune right at the beginning of the music video along with part way through the video.
- Cuts from Square 1.
- Play tinie tempah – Miami to Ibiza.
- Similarly to our video this video speeds up and has rapid transitions when the music is also sped up.
- Also when the pace quickened in the chorus so did the speed of the shots we used to represent the artist. We felt as though this was done effectively and appealed well to the audience based on our audience feedback.
- The next point is closely linked to the first according to our music video which is included in Goodwins analysis and this is that there should be many close ups and images of the artist throughout the music video and this is because of the demand on the record label.
- Picture of adam.
- This gives them the needed representation and publicity, this also means certain traits and trademarks can be differentiated to the audience examples being micheal jacksons glove and in our music video the colourful sunglasses worn by the artist even though the predominant colour worn by him was dark and lifeless (gray.)
- Play Kanye west – Goldigger
- Voyerism is also used in music videos which mainly apply to males. This was one convention that was absent in our music video however, we felt as though it was not needed to maximise the overall appeal of the music video and also we felt as though voyeuristic shots of either the male or female gender was not in keeping with the message we were trying to portray although music videos of this genre usually contain some voyeuristic shots either gender an example being kanye west goldigger.
- Lastly Goodwin outlined that there must be some intertextual refrence. We struggled in this aspect as our main focus was passing the message on through music and therefore this could not be done.
- Overall, in some aspects our music video seems to follow the normal conventions associated with this genre of a music video. This is because with normal narratives many videos contain within them a location with other people around for obvious connotations and these people seem to be oblivious to the artist this is almost used as a way of emphasising the artist a real life example being katy perry firework.
- Show clip From firework.
- In this video she is surrounded by other members of the public however, this shows how she is like everyone else and so is almost blending into the crowd as they don’t seem to know she is there and this is how she is trying to achieve something with her song.
- Cuts from Square 1.
- Similarly our music video shows that the main characters are there but they aren’t as this is supposed to denote how this music video is all reality but only in the main characters mind.
- Also the factor of a message being conveyed is also present through the presence of others who seem to be oblivious as to what is going on.
- Many music videos now contain a narrative and it is becoming more and more popular to in build the music video into a narrative and to start the music after you have made the audience aware of the narrative our example being Chris brown feat lil wayne. Similarly to our it begins with the main character.
- Clip from Chris brown
- And this is the same aspect from our music video.
- Cuts from Square 1.
- Following this theres the dormant trigger as which gets the ball rowling and which plays a key role in the narrative.
- Clip from chris brown.
- And the same in our music video.
- Cuts from Square 1.
- Then there is some sort of interaction.
- Clip from chris brown.
- And then ours.
- Cuts from Square 1.
- Clip from chris brown. + Cuts from Square 1.
- Then there is the active trigger which begins the video and then the transition which begins the music video.
- Based on the way everything is set out and the narrative our music video is very similar to a real music video and it follows the needed checkpoints in linking the narrative to the video.
- However we feel as though the narrative is very original and cannot find any similar video which also means as well as following the normal conventions our music video goes against the conventions. The narrative is very much based on a message which we where trying to portray just the way we went about it was abstract.
